L-band Equipment

SatService has a long lasting experience in developing and manufacturing L-band IF equipment, modules and sub-systems for satellite ground stations. Everything started in 2005 with the development of an L-band distributor (sat-nms LRXD18), which provides as additional features LNB supply and alarm monitoring. At that time the configuration per 19inch 1RU chassis was 1 input and 8 outputs. Relatively quick the customer demand changed to two of these 1:8 distributors in one 1RU 19inch chassis which became the sat-nms LRXD28. Later also a solution for the output of a typical Ku-band LNB system was introduced to the market, sat-nms LRXD44, which integrates 4 distributor with 4 L-band outputs each in 1RU, including LNB supply. All 19inch drawer included the necessary monitoring and alarm functionality to provide LNB current monitoring capabilities and alarm outputs.

Based on these experience SatService was also in the position to realize more specialized distributor configuration, like for example sat-nms LRXD14, which has a DIN-rail module form factor and provides 1 LNB input port including a diplexer for LNB supply voltage and 10MHz reference frequency supply. The target applications here are in satellite news gathering (SNG) vans, where mechanical size is essential and in front of VSAT modems which require also the 10MHz distribution.

A more sophisticated L-band equipment is the sat-nms SMU signal management unit. The goal was here to integrate and combine different applications in one 2RU 19inch rack mount chassis. All modules can be integrated in the different slots of the chassis so that you can easily configure it to your specific requirements and quantities

The first slide in module was the universal multipurpose switch which includes 4 L-band switches which provide at each of its two input ports level monitoring and DC insertion capability for LNBs. This allows the configuration of powerful redundancy switching capabilities of RX antenna farms , fully monitored and controlled in an chassis. . As you can slide in up to 5 of these cards you are in a position to perform the redundancy switching of up to 2x5 Ku-band RX receive antennas with one chassis. This is a very powerful approach for example for IPTV or other antenna farm applications where customer want to generate a higher availability by two redundant antennas at different buildings for example.

The L-band line amplifier module includes 4 gain adjustable L-band amplifier which includes also the capability to insert DC for LNB supply and level monitoring of each L-band signal. Ideal for example in front of switch matrices.

In contrast to that the sat-nms CS24 combiner splitter modules provides qty 2 1:4 splitter. As they are passive devices they can be used in both directions which means you can also use them not only in the typical RX receive but also in TX transmit applications.

The application behind the sat-nms TMPS transfer multipurpose switch modules is a little bit more sophisticated. With these modules you can easily configure a 1:1 or 2:1 LNB redundancy switching system with full monitoring and control capability and the possibility to integrate this also in a higher level M&C monitoring and control system. If you combine two of these slide in modules in one chassis you even can enable the full redundancy switching of 2:1 WDL dual output LNBs from SMW Swedish Microwave, as these provide two L-band output ports, one for Ku low band and one for the Ku high band. Therefore you need twice transfer switches at the L-band output section of the redundancy switching.

In the meantime the SatService team has developed a huge number of different modules. Based on this experience and pool of printed circuit boards the team is in the position to react on user requirements very quickly and adapt developments to specific user requirements.

Some of these parts are also marked separately as sat-nms L-band Components. These are for examples l-band couplers, splitters in different configurations and port numbers, impedance converter from 50 to 75Ohm or vice versa and attenuators allowing the DC and 10MHz bypass.

As a conclusion, if you do not find a sat-nms product already available which matches your requirements, please do not hesitate to send us your specifications and we will check if you can quote you and adaptation.

sat-nms LSM L-Band Switch Matrix

sat-nms L-Band Switch Matrix

The sat-nms LSM L-Band Switch Matrix is a central sub-system in a satellite ground station or a teleport with several antennas. This switch matrix allows the user to switch each of its RF inputs, for example, from different antennas/LNCs, to each output, actively distributed without any blocking effects. This gives the user an unlimited routing and configuration capability.

The unit includes two power supplies with two independent mains voltage input connectors. Internal redundancy switchover between the two power supplies improves the availability of the unit. All modules are hot swappable without interrupting the users services.

In the standard configuration all RF-connectors are SMA 50Ohm female connectors. If you need other connectors, just contact us!

Example for Signal Conversion 50 to 75Ohm

SatService is able to offer the corresponding adapters and impedance transformers.

Model Variants

The switch matrix is available in a lot of different configurations. The number of inputs and outputs are the maximum possible number for the corresponding model:

  • 19" 3 RU: 8x8, 8x16, 8x32, 16x8, 32x8
  • 19" 6 RU: 16x16, 16x32, 32x16
  • 19" 9 RU: 32x32

Subsets are also possible, e.g. the LSM 1012 is a 16x16 matrix equipped with 10 input cards and 12 output cards, that can be expanded with up to 16 input and 16 outputs.

The modular design allows also larger numbers of input and output ports. Matrix systems that exeed 32x32 will be realized by a combination of n x 32x32 complete matrices..

sat-nms LRXD L-Band Distributor

sat-nms LRXD14

The sat-nms LRXD L-Band Distributor has two functions in professional satellite ground stations. It provides the redundant supply voltage for the Low Noise Converters (LNC) and distributes the receiving signal to multiple outputs at which the satellite receivers are connected.

The compact version sat-nms LRXD-14 is designed for satellite ground terminals where a 19" rack-mount unit is not possible due to space limitations, for example, in mobile satellite news gathering terminals. The unit provides:

  • An active 0dB L-Band distributor with 4 L-Band output ports with mixed 50Ohm SMA and 75Ohm F connectors
  • 14/18V and 22kHz tone switching initiated by contact closure interface, LNB’s polarisation and frequency range
  • An external supplied 10MHz reference is mulitplexed on the L-Band interface to the LNC if applied to 10MHz input
  • The unit is powered by external 24V DC that are available in all satellite ground terminals

Internal amplifiers compensate the loss of the distribution circuit. The signal distribution is realized with cascaded Wilkinson dividers that guarantee good frequency response and isolation between the different output ports.

The models sat-nms LRXD-18, sat-nms LRXD-28 and sat-nms LRXD-116 (1RU) include two power supplies with two independent mains voltage input connectors. The internal redundancy switchover between the two power supplies improves the availabilty of the unit.
